What is Facebook Insights?

facebook page design ashevilleAccording to Facebook “Insights provides Facebook Page owners … with metrics around their content. By understanding and analyzing trends within user growth and demographics, consumption of content, and creation of content, Page owners … are better equipped to improve their business with Facebook.”

What does that mean, and why should you care?

Well, Insights can give you a real way to monitor and quantify your Facebook visitors, interactions and “virality.” This is how you’re going to justify spending all those hours playing Farmville – I mean posting intriguing and engaging content for your fans. This is the first and most quantifiable gauge of ROI – whether its’ the expenditure of money on making your page look good and the time, effort and psychic energy you’re spending posting and interacting.

Sounds good, huh? Well – it is. If you take a look into your insights (only works if you have 30+ “likes,”) you’ll notice a lot of information. We won’t beat you over the head with all the details of WHY this information is important. But really – you can probably see the usefulness of all this without us having to point it all out to you…

There are 2 types of Facebook Insights – User Insights, found when clicking “X” Like This and Interactions Insights, shown when you click on Insights in your left hand nav (see image above.)

These are certainly 2 different types of info – related, but separate.

User Insights are stuff like total page “Likes,” daily active users, new “Likes” & “Unlikes,” “Like” sources, demographics, page views and unique page views, tab views, external referrers, media consumption. This information is very useful – it will tell you if you’re reaching the audience you want to reach and where they’re going on your Facebook page. Super nice!

Interactions Insights are for stuff like “Likes” on your posts, mentions, comments, reviews, discussions, wall posts, video/image posts, etc. What this will tell you is whether or not the content you’re putting out there is useful, entertaining, repost-worthy or valuable in any way to your audience. While this information is great and can keep you from spinning your wheels, you must be careful that you don’t assume that just because your info is getting liked and shared that it’s as effective as it can be. If your User Insights show that your audience isn’t the one you’re after (the ones who will send you money/leads/business,) all that great content is essentially falling upon deaf ears.

If you use both of Facebook’s Insights in tandem, you can really get a good picture of how your Facebook page is doing. Either one, taken separately, is good and useful, but used together – it’s like the Wonder Twins! Wonder Insights Power ACTIVATE! Form of: Clients! Form of: Money! Really, when you think about it, the Wonder Twins’ powers were entirely disproportionate. Maybe I should write a blog post…
